  1. HOLLYWOOD MOGUL OVERVIEW

  5. In Hollywood Mogul you run your own Hollywood movie studio. The game is played in one month turns. To move from one month to the next, you select "Call It A Day" from the Studio Gate menu.

  7. If you look at the top of the screen, you will see that the window title bar contains the amount of money the studio has, the studio name (which you can change), and the current game month and year.

  9. The object of the game is to make and release 100 movies without going bankrupt. If you make enough money, you get into the Hall Of Fame. In order to make money, you have to make movies.

  11. Movies are made in phases. The phases of Hollywood Mogul are:

  13.     Development     - Screenplay preparation
  14.             - Budgeting the movie
  15.             - Selecting locations for filming
  16.             - Budgeting Special Effects
  17.             - Negotiating with agents to hire talent
  18.     Pre-Production    - Constructing the Sets    
  19.     Production      - Filming the movie
  20.             - Dealing with production problems
  21.     Post-Production    - Adding Special Effects
  22.             - Test Screening / Re-Editing
  23.     Release        - Selecting the number of theaters for release
  24.             - Budgeting for TV, Print, and Radio advertising
  25.             - Attending the World Premiere
  26.     Award Ceremony    - Remember, it's an honor just to be nominated.

  28. DEVELOPMENT
  29. The first phase of movie-making is development. It requires a screenplay. A screenplay is a map of the movie, and requires a source idea. These are the source ideas available in Hollywood Mogul:
  30.     - An Original Screenplay
  31.     - A Novel
  32.     - A Stage Play
  33.     - A Sequel to a movie previously released
  34.     - Your own idea
  35.  
  36.     Also during the Development Phase you have to decide
  37.     - The budget (how much to spend making the movie)
  38.     - Where the movie will be filmed
  39.         - Interior Scenes
  40.             - On a studio sound stage
  41.             - On location
  42.         - Exterior Scenes
  43.             - On the studio backlot
  44.             - On location anywhere on earth
  45.     - The amount and type of special effects you want
  46.  
  47.     Then it's time to complete the final stages of Development
  48.     - Hire a Producer
  49.     - Negotiate with an agent to hire a Director
  50.     - Negotiate with an agent to hire all of the actors and actresses
  51.     As the Head of the Studio, only you can authorize the next phase:
  52.     - Green Light this movie    
  53.  
  54. PRE-PRODUCTION
  55. A "Green Light" moves the movie forward into the production phases. During Pre-Production:
  56.     - Set constuction is completed
  57.     When a film completes Pre-Production, it automatically moves to the next phase.

  59. PRODUCTION
  60. And principal photography takes place. In other words, the movie is filmed. When Production is complete ("That's a wrap"), the movie automatically moves into the next phase.

  62. POST-PRODUCTION
  63.     - Special effects are automatically added
  64.     - The movie is edited and completed
  65.     - Test Screen the movie
  66.     - Re-edit the movie (if you want)
  67.     - Accept (or change) the Film Rating
  68.     When the movie completes Post-Production ("It's in the can.") it is ready for release.

  70. RELEASE 
  71. During this final phase, you must
  72.     - Select the number of theaters for release
  73.     - Budget for TV, Print, and Radio advertising
  74.     - Choose a Release Date
  75.     - Attend the World Premiere 
  76.     - Watch the revenue pour in

  78. AWARD CEREMONY
  79. Each year, the Hollywood community rewards excellence in achievement. If one of your movies, or someone who participated in one of your movies, has achieved such excellence, they may be nominated for an award. And then, each March the Award winners are determined.

  82. In Hollywood Mogul, the challenge of the game is to keep the studio from going bankrupt.
