In Hollywood Mogul you run your own Hollywood movie studio. The game is played in one month turns. To move from one month to the next, you select "Call It A Day" from the Studio Gate menu.
If you look at the top of the screen, you will see that the window title bar contains the amount of money the studio has, the studio name (which you can change), and the current game month and year.
The object of the game is to make and release 100 movies without going bankrupt. If you make enough money, you get into the Hall Of Fame. In order to make money, you have to make movies.
Movies are made in phases. The phases of Hollywood Mogul are:
Development - Screenplay preparation
- Budgeting the movie
- Selecting locations for filming
- Budgeting Special Effects
- Negotiating with agents to hire talent
Pre-Production - Constructing the Sets
Production - Filming the movie
- Dealing with production problems
Post-Production - Adding Special Effects
- Test Screening / Re-Editing
Release - Selecting the number of theaters for release
- Budgeting for TV, Print, and Radio advertising
- Attending the World Premiere
Award Ceremony - Remember, it's an honor just to be nominated.
DEVELOPMENT
The first phase of movie-making is development. It requires a screenplay. A screenplay is a map of the movie, and requires a source idea. These are the source ideas available in Hollywood Mogul:
- An Original Screenplay
- A Novel
- A Stage Play
- A Sequel to a movie previously released
- Your own idea
Also during the Development Phase you have to decide
- The budget (how much to spend making the movie)
- Where the movie will be filmed
- Interior Scenes
- On a studio sound stage
- On location
- Exterior Scenes
- On the studio backlot
- On location anywhere on earth
- The amount and type of special effects you want
Then it's time to complete the final stages of Development
- Hire a Producer
- Negotiate with an agent to hire a Director
- Negotiate with an agent to hire all of the actors and actresses
As the Head of the Studio, only you can authorize the next phase:
- Green Light this movie
PRE-PRODUCTION
A "Green Light" moves the movie forward into the production phases. During Pre-Production:
- Set constuction is completed
When a film completes Pre-Production, it automatically moves to the next phase.
PRODUCTION
And principal photography takes place. In other words, the movie is filmed. When Production is complete ("That's a wrap"), the movie automatically moves into the next phase.
POST-PRODUCTION
- Special effects are automatically added
- The movie is edited and completed
- Test Screen the movie
- Re-edit the movie (if you want)
- Accept (or change) the Film Rating
When the movie completes Post-Production ("It's in the can.") it is ready for release.
RELEASE
During this final phase, you must
- Select the number of theaters for release
- Budget for TV, Print, and Radio advertising
- Choose a Release Date
- Attend the World Premiere
- Watch the revenue pour in
AWARD CEREMONY
Each year, the Hollywood community rewards excellence in achievement. If one of your movies, or someone who participated in one of your movies, has achieved such excellence, they may be nominated for an award. And then, each March the Award winners are determined.
In Hollywood Mogul, the challenge of the game is to keep the studio from going bankrupt.
